Lake Pend'Oreille, Idaho

My friend and longtime Pemberton riding partner, Mick, from Washington, invited us over to his place near Sandpoint, Idaho for a weekend of sledding. I didn't realize there was such a great variety of sledding opportunities just south of the border. The first day we headed out behind the condo up into the hills to a place called Trestle Creek. The trail was beautifully groomed and wound its way from the lower elevations up to some nice open areas on the mountain tops. I wouldn't exactly call it 'alpine' riding, but it was a good day. |

The following day we headed up towards Bonner's Ferry to a well known riding area called 'Roman Nose'. It was awesome! Freshly groomed trail from the valley floor all the way up to an alpine lake. There must have been over 10 feet of snow there - and it was a low snow year for them. The hill climbing was great and I was even able to do some boondocking on the other side of the mountain - just exploring mile after mile of terrain in what was once a beautiful forest, now just standing timbers after a very large forest fire raged through the area several years ago. I would have had some pictures, but ran out of film and forgot to get more before we headed out. |

When riding in Idaho, all non residents must purchase a non resident trail permit available at many outlets throughout the state. The decal must be placed somewhere visible on the sled and is fairly inexpensive. It is good for a full year from date of purchase. The grooming is done by the state parks or forest department on a rotating basis throughout the areas. Check with the locals to find out what has been recently groomed before heading out. |
